Only buy after the concern, exposure path, and product claim connect
PFAS, microplastics, and heavy metals are different problems. A test for one does not answer the others, and a filter that reduces one contaminant may do little—or nothing—for another.
For most buyers in Thailand, the smartest first move is not replacing everything. Choose one current concern, check the water or product you actually use, and demand evidence for the exact model, material, batch, or laboratory method before spending.
Start with the thing you actually use
Perhaps you saw a story about PFAS in bottled water. Maybe someone warned you about a non-stick pan, a ceramic mug, microplastics, or heavy metals in supplements. The claim may deserve attention, but the category alone does not tell you what to buy.

If the seller cannot move from a broad concern to a named contaminant and exact product, you do not yet have a buying case.
PFAS, microplastics, and heavy metals need separate decisions
PFAS: ask which compounds and which source
PFAS is a broad class of chemicals, not one single contaminant. Drinking water can be an exposure path, but it is not the only one.
Ask which PFAS compounds a laboratory measures or which named PFAS an exact filter model is certified to reduce. “Removes forever chemicals” is not enough.
Some properly maintained point-of-use systems using granular activated carbon, ion exchange, or reverse osmosis can reduce certain PFAS. Performance depends on the exact system, claim, installation, water conditions, cartridge life, and maintenance.
NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certification can support a specific PFAS-reduction claim. It does not prove that a filter removes every PFAS compound or meets every possible regulatory threshold.
Microplastics: do not substitute a different test
A PFAS result is not a microplastics result. A total dissolved solids reading is not a microplastics test either.
Ask what particle sizes a laboratory can detect, how particles are identified, and how sampling contamination is controlled. Without those details, two reports may measure very different things.
Do not let a dramatic particle-count claim rush you into buying a product whose performance is not defined for the particles you want to reduce.
Heavy metals: name the metal and the product
Lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury should not be treated as one interchangeable “heavy metals” result. Ask which metals were tested, in what sample, by which method, and at what reporting limit.
The same rule applies to cookware, water, ceramics, and supplements: evidence should match the exact item or batch you may buy.
The 7-check buyer filter
Use these seven checks before buying a test, filter, replacement household product, or supplement.
What exactly am I concerned about?
Name the contaminant: a particular PFAS compound or panel, microplastics, lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, or something else. If all you have is the word “toxins,” pause.
What is the plausible exposure path?
Identify the source you actually use: municipal water at your tap, a house or condo tank, a refill station, delivered or bottled water, a pan or ceramic vessel, one supplement lot, or another specific food-contact product. Do not assume a finding from another country, brand, building, or water source describes yours.
Does the evidence match my exact item?
Look for an exact model number, material, batch, lot, water sample, or point of use. “Tested technology,” “lab verified,” and “certified components” are weaker than proof tied to the complete product you will receive.
Is the claim precise enough to verify?
A useful claim names the contaminant or analyte, test or certification standard, result or reduction claim, conditions or capacity, and exact model, sample, or lot. For filters, check the certification directory—not just a badge in a product image.
What has to happen after purchase?
Ask about installation, flushing, cartridge changes, cleaning, storage, sample handling, retesting, and replacement parts. A capable filter that is poorly maintained can become expensive false reassurance.
What is the full ownership cost?
Calculate the system or product, installation, cartridges or consumables, shipping and import costs, testing, retesting, maintenance, and eventual replacement or disposal. Use the expected annual cost, not the introductory price.
What result would change my decision?
Decide this before ordering a test. A confirmed result may justify a certified treatment system; a clean result may stop a panic-driven replacement; missing model evidence may make you skip the product; an unaffordable cartridge cycle may send you to another system.
A test without a decision attached can create more uncertainty without improving your next move.
Buying a water test in Thailand
Choose the water that represents your real exposure: kitchen-tap water after a building tank, water from your existing filter, your usual refill station, or the bottled product you drink most often.
Testing several unrelated sources at once may produce more data, but it can also make the decision harder. Start with the one source whose result could change what you buy or use.
Before paying a laboratory, confirm:
- Whether it accepts consumer samples and whether the relevant method is within its current accreditation scope.
- The exact PFAS compounds or metals included.
- For microplastics, the particle-size range and identification method.
- Sample-container, collection, field-blank, shipping, and holding-time requirements.
- Detection and reporting limits, price, turnaround time, and report format.
- Whether the result identifies individual analytes rather than only a broad category.
Thailand-specific PFAS occurrence and consumer laboratory access are still unresolved. Do not treat a foreign prevalence claim as proof about your tap, building tank, refill station, or bottled-water brand.
Buying a water filter in Thailand
A filter is worth considering when the exact system can support the exact reduction you need and you can maintain it for its full service life.
Ask for the exact certification
For PFAS, look for the complete model in an independent certification directory under the relevant NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 claim. Confirm which named contaminants the claim covers.
“Uses certified media” does not establish that the complete system has the same performance.
Check Thailand support before importing
An attractive overseas price can become a poor buy if replacement cartridges are unavailable, incompatible, expensive to ship, or difficult to dispose of.
Price at least one full year of use and confirm who supports the system in Thailand.
Match the technology to the decision
Granular activated carbon, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis may reduce certain PFAS when used in appropriately designed and maintained systems. That does not make every product using those terms equivalent.
- Exact reduction claim, rated capacity, and test conditions.
- Flow rate, cartridge-change interval, and exact replacement-cartridge identity.
- Local cartridge availability, installation requirements, and any pre-treatment.
- Wastewater for reverse osmosis and disposal guidance for used media.
Cookware and household products
Non-stick and PTFE cookware
Traditional PTFE belongs in the broader PFAS-family discussion. That fact alone does not establish the dose or harm caused by using one pan.
Decide from the pan’s condition, construction, intended use, temperature limits, care requirements, and exact material information. A “PFAS-free” badge should define what the seller means.
Aluminum, brass, and Hindalium cookware
The U.S. FDA has identified specific imported aluminum, brass, and Hindalium cookware products that can leach lead into food.
That is a reason to check exact products—not to declare every imported pan unsafe. Look for product identity, material composition, manufacturer, applicable warning, and credible migration testing.
Ceramic and glazed products
“Ceramic” can describe different constructions and surfaces. Ask whether the food-contact surface is glazed, coated, solid ceramic, or ceramic-coated metal.
For lead or other metals, seek credible migration testing tied to the exact item and production—not a generic material claim.
Supplements: verify the lot, not the marketing
Do not buy a supplement as a response to a contamination scare unless it has a separate, clear reason to be part of your decision.
If your concern is heavy metals in the supplement itself, request a certificate of analysis that matches the lot you will receive. It should identify the laboratory, lot number, metals tested, method, reporting limits, and actual results.
Be cautious when:
- The certificate covers a different lot or says only “pass” without results.
- The laboratory is not identified or “third-party tested” appears without a report.
- Several metals are collapsed into one vague line.
- The seller responds to contamination questions with detox claims.
Testing, chelation, detox products, and treatment are different decisions. A product page should not blur them together.

Replace the bracketed fields, then send the same precise request to every option you are comparing.

When to stop the purchase
The concern cannot be named more precisely than “toxins.”
A PFAS claim is supported only by a TDS reading.
One result is being used to imply safety from PFAS, microplastics, and heavy metals.
A filter badge cannot be matched to the complete model in a certification directory.
The seller supplies evidence for a different model, batch, or lot.
A laboratory cannot name its method, analytes, or reporting limits.
A cookware warning is generalized beyond the products actually identified.
“Ceramic” or “PFAS-free” is used without defining the construction or claim.
Replacement cartridges or annual costs cannot be confirmed in Thailand.
A contamination concern is redirected into a detox or supplement sale.
The product creates more unanswered questions than the current item.
Stopping is not doing nothing. It is avoiding a purchase that has not earned your confidence.
Frequently asked questions
Is PFAS in Thailand’s drinking water?
PFAS occurrence in the water source you personally use cannot be assumed from a foreign report, newsletter, or general PFAS discussion. Thailand-specific occurrence remains unresolved without suitable local evidence. If the answer would change a purchase, investigate the exact water at your point of use.
Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?
Some properly designed and maintained reverse-osmosis systems can reduce certain PFAS. Check the exact model, named reduction claim, certification, capacity, maintenance requirements, and replacement costs. “RO” by itself is not sufficient proof.
Are activated-carbon filters enough?
Some granular activated-carbon systems can reduce certain PFAS, but performance varies. Confirm the complete model’s named claim, rated life, test conditions, and cartridge schedule.
Does NSF certification mean a filter removes all PFAS?
No. NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certification supports the specific claims listed for the exact model. It does not establish removal of every PFAS compound or performance against every regulatory threshold.
Can a TDS meter detect PFAS, microplastics, or lead?
A household TDS reading does not identify PFAS or microplastics and does not provide a contaminant-specific lead result. Use a method designed for the exact substance you want to measure.
Should I replace all non-stick cookware?
A broad PFAS-family classification does not prove the dose or harm from one pan. Check the exact material, condition, use, temperature limits, and manufacturer information before deciding what deserves replacement.
Is all imported aluminum or brass cookware unsafe?
No. FDA findings concern specifically identified products shown to leach lead. Check the exact item and evidence rather than generalizing to every imported pan.
What should I test first?
Test the source most likely to change a decision. For many people, that is the water they drink every day after any building storage or existing filtration—not every possible water source at once.
Should I buy a detox supplement while I investigate?
No supplement can substitute for identifying the contaminant, exposure path, and appropriate evidence. Keep supplement quality questions separate from testing, filtration, and any treatment decision.
Make one purchase earn your confidence
Choose the test, filter, pan, household product, or supplement you are considering right now. Put it through the seven checks before you pay.
If you can name the concern, trace the plausible exposure path, verify the exact evidence, and afford the full ownership cycle, you have a defensible reason to act. If you cannot, keep your money until the missing question is answered.
